Definition: Social and Cultural Literacy

Social and Cultural Literacy

  1. possess the skills to simply recognize and accept the differences without making value judgments.
Howitt, J et al. 2002, Heinemann: Society and Culture, Harcourt Education, Melbourne, Australia.
  2. It is a cognitive acquaintance and working relationship within a system of language and culture that is dependent on history and heritage.

this is a very pertinent issue, vital to world peace (producing tolerance), economic empowerment (recognition of how things work and being able to utilize these forces for one’s own advancement), good governance (that’s pretty obvious). I googled the keywords ‘social literacy’ because after being interested in the problem of my country’s abysmal literacy statistics, and reading and doing stuff about it on the ground, I think that you cannot divorce ‘learning to read and write’ from the social. As with so many things an anthropologist ? would be familiar with, it is not abstractable, without absurdity, from the social milieu. So I thought what we all need is social and cultural literacy first, and then solve the problem of the inequitable distribution of so called ‘literacy’ and especially ‘competence’ which is just another word for the global hegemony’s way of doing ‘literacy’ and the things the global hegemony are ‘competent’ at. With a deserved respect for the ‘other’ culture, as well as one’s own, certain people will ‘get over themselves’ and stop ‘teaching others’ and certain people will come to value aspects of what their tradition gave them as precious, to be valued, and begin to teach, and there may be some balance in the state of the human race.

To the person who stated Hitler did nothing wrong, must be uninformed. 1st. How can you stated killing off your own race, isnt wrong, it’s murder! 2nd How do you know that somewhere in your gene pool you werent related to someone in the holocaust? 3rd what does Hitler being right or wrong to do with this document. Nothing, absolutely not a freakin’ thing!
Unless you were looking for a reaction be it good or bad, if you think that saying something like that is comedic to you then i urge you, no i challenge you to sit with a survivor of the holocaust have then relive the horror they had to experience, have them tell you in graphic detail the hell on earth they went through, and survived and tell me then, Could you survive the same? I am of Jew descent, and your comment is highly offense, yes there is the 4th amendment rights Freedom of speech, i will give you that, i also challenge to support why you state “Hitler did nothing wrong. Do a thorough research I am curious to know your opinion.
Thank for the article unfortunately it was not the definition i was looking for.
